Each member is paired with a mentor who is responsible for providing advice, encouragement and support.  Mentor's meet with members at The Rising Son, Inc. on Friday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to discuss each participants progress at home and school.  Activities also include "Man-Up!" Manhood Training, Group Discussions, "Smart Moves" Chess Club, Checkers, Table Hockey/Soccer, Video Games and Field Trips.  Snacks and refreshments are provided.

Mentors also visit the member's school twice per month to monitor academic performance and behavior.  Mentors document student's progress and share with parent/legal guardian.

Each mentor has made a committment to contact each member by cell phone, text, email and/or in person a minimum of 5 contacts per week.   Contacts Include facility, school and home visits.  Weekly activities include: 

  • Healthy snacks

  • Homework Help/tutoring

  • Computer Lab and Learning Center

  • "Man-Up!" Lifeskills Workshops

  • Group Discussions

  • Motivational Guest Speakers

  • Social Recreation (Chess, Table Games, Non-violent Video Games)

  • Sports (Basketball, Flag Football, Kickball, Tennis, Baseball)

  • Field Trips (Movies, Mall Walks, Skating, Bowling, Swimming)

  • Daily journal entries

Each member is part of an extended family of brothers and Mentors who encourage one another to pursue excellence in all endeavors.

"SAVING OUR SONS"
SUMMER DAY CAMP

6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. - (Mon. - Fri.)

For 9 weeks each summer, The Rising Son, Inc. provides a summer camp for boys ages 6 - 16.  The following is a list of daily activities:

  • Breakfast and lunch (no pork or beef)

  • Sports (Basketball, Football, Baseball, Tennis, Swimming)

  • Social Recreation (Chess, Checkers, Table games, etc.)

  • Arts and Crafts

  • Reading and Math

  • Computer Lab

  • Motivational Guest Speakers

  • Field Trips (Local attractions, Universal Studios, Colleges, etc.)

  • Daily Journal Entries


"SAVING OUR SONS"

RITES OF PASSAGE PROGRAM

This program was inspired by Baba Mwalimu Baruti's book, "Asafo-A Warriors Guide to Manhood".  Members ages 12 and up will be selected to participate in a rites of passage program.  Participants are requred to demonstrate competency in a variety of tasks associated with preparation for manhood to include the following:

  • Maintain a "B" average or above in school.

  • Cleans room and assists with household chores.

  • Can prepare a complete meal for the entire family.

  • Knows how to plant and maintain a vegetable garden.

  • Knows how to fish, hunt and cook small game.

  • Knows how to save a life (Basic CPR/First Aid skills).

  • Knows how to swim the length of an olympic pool.

  • Can run at least 1 mile in 10 minutes or less.

  • Knows basic auto repair and maintenance.

  • Knows basic carpentry, electrical and plumbing repair.

  • Has completed Domestic Violence Prevention workshop.

  • Has completed Abstinence & Male/Female Relationship workshop.

  • Has a basic knowledge of self-defense and conflict resolution.

  • Has a minimum of $100.00 in a savings account

  • Has completed a driver's safety course & has a learner's permit.

  • Has visited a local college and met with an academic advisor.

  • Has visited a technical vocational school & met with an advisor.

  • Has selected a "Career Coach" working in his chosen profession.

  • Can draw a "Family Tree" listing all living relatives.   

When members reach 16 years of age and have successfully completed the tasks listed above, his mentor may recommend him to the Board of Elders for participation in the annual "S.O.S." Rites of Passage Ceremony.  Parents, relatives, mentors and friends will be invited to celebrate and support each member selected to begin the lifelong journey to manhood.
